Committee Votes to Support Research Identifying Root Causes of Opioid Addiction
Washington, DC,
June 20, 2019
Today, the Expanding Findings for Federal Opioid Research and Treatment Act (EFFORT Act), introduced by Congressman Jim Baird (R-IN) and Congresswoman Jennifer Wexton (D-VA), passed unanimously through the U.S. House Committee on Science, Space, and Technology. The bill supports research that would identify the root causes of opioid addiction and prevent gaps in treatment. “The opioid crisis has tragically destroyed the lives of many Hoosiers. It does not discriminate and continued research is crucial for finding ways to prevent and treat addiction,” said Congressman Baird. “There is no one-size fits-all solution, but we must use evidence-based policy to ensure the health and well-being of current and future generations. Opioid addiction is an issue where both sides of the aisle have come together and I am proud Congress is taking action to fight back against this epidemic.” The EFFORT ACT directs the National Science Foundation (NSF), in consultation with the National Institute of Health (NIH), to support merit-reviewed and competitively awarded research on the science of opioid addiction. H.R. 3153 was introduced by Congressman Baird and Congresswoman Wexton earlier this month.
