Congressman Baird Votes to Help Hoosier Families Save More for Retirement

Congressman Jim Baird (R-IN-04) today voted in favor of the Setting Every Community Up for Retirement Enhancement Act of 2019 (H.R. 1994), a bipartisan measure that encourages Americans to save earlier and more for retirement, and lowers the Gold Star families tax for children of fallen military service members. The bill passed the U.S. House of Representatives by a vote of 417-3.

“As paychecks continue to grow for Hoosier families, we must take every opportunity to build on our thriving economy. I’m proud to support the pro-family and pro-worker SECURE Act making it easier to save for the future and easing the burden placed on children of our fallen veterans,” said Congressman Baird. “I’m pleased to see both sides of the aisle working together to put American families and workers first.”

H.R. 1994 builds on reforms passed by House Republicans to ease administrative burdens for Main Street businesses, allowing them to offer retirement plans that are tailored to the needs of their employees. The bill also encourages families to save longer by removing the age limit for contributing to IRAs and raising the minimum age for retirement withdrawal from 70 and a half to 72. Additionally, H.R. 1994 allows parents to access their retirement accounts without penalty to make withdrawals for the birth or adoption of a child.
