Baird Applauds Announcement of New CHIPS Funding for Indiana Facility

Washington, D.C. - Today, Congressman Jim Baird (IN-04) applauded the recent DoD selection of Silicon Crossroads Microelectronics Commons Hub in Bloomington and its coordinating body, The Applied Research Institute, as one of eight Microelectronics Commons regional innovations hubs under the CHIPS Act.

“I’m incredibly excited to hear Hoosiers will be leading the microelectronics and semiconductor revolution,” said Rep. Baird. “Rebuilding our semiconductor manufacturing capacity will strengthen our economy, reinforce America’s chip supply chain, and fortify our national security. I’m proud to have played a role in promoting semiconductor manufacturing and am thrilled to see how Hoosiers will innovate in this field.”

Background:

  • The Creating Helpful Incentives to Produce Semiconductors (CHIPS) and Science Act is a nationwide network of facilities dedicated to strengthening domestic semiconductor manufacturing and provides funding for the creation of Microelectronics Commons regional innovation hubs.

  • The DoD’s recent announcement awards $238 million in funding for the selected facilities, of which $32.9 million has been awarded to The Applied Research Institute in Bloomington.

  • On March 1st, Rep. Baird sent a letter to DoD Under Secretary Heidi Shyu, along with the rest of the Indiana delegation, expressing his support for The Applied Research Institute’s candidacy.
