Baird Releases Statement on CHIPS Vote

Washington, D.C. – Today, Congressman Jim Baird (IN-04) released the following statement on the CHIPS Act of 2022.

“In the last year alone, Indiana has secured several multi-billion-dollar investments to establish semiconductor chip research and production facilities further securing our state’s role at the forefront of American ingenuity and innovation,” said Congressman Baird.  “These investments will create thousands of jobs across our state and generate millions of dollars to boost our local economy because businesses see the endless potential in Indiana and across America’s heartland.

“Indiana is a critical leader in the development and manufacturing of weapon systems and components that keep America’s freedoms safe, including C-130s transports, modernized B-52 bombers, E-2D Advanced Hawkeyes, Humvees, transmissions for the M1 Abrams tank, hypersonic missiles, and, in Indiana’s 4th Congressional District, the T-7 trainer. The reality is we will be unable to maintain our competitive edge against China absent a comprehensive response to China’s aggressive approach to technology dominance. I am reassured by this legislation’s guardrails to keep our most technologically advanced semiconductors out of the hands of China and valuable research dollars here in America. I recognize the national security threats China’s command of this space poses, and I believe this bill can positively reshape America’s global influence and power for decades as well as position us to compete with China for ownership of technological advancement. We can’t allow China to establish new rules for use of these advanced technologies, particularly in the warzone.

“With the Chinese Communist Party actively whipping against this legislation, I recognize how critical this bill is not only to Hoosier prosperity but to our national security, which is why I voted in favor of this bill.”
