The requested funding would allow White County to complete Preliminary Engineering for the reconstruction of County Road 300 East from State Road 18 to U.S. 24.
CR 300 E is a 9.8-mile rural major collector that connects two major highways and supports agricultural production, freight movement, school transportation, and daily commuters. Traffic volumes range from approximately 3,600 to more than 4,200 vehicles per day, with commercial traffic reaching up to 25 percent in some segments. Between 2020 and 2024, 87 crashes were recorded along the corridor, including 18 injury crashes. A significant number of crashes involved vehicles running off the roadway, reflecting narrow lanes, limited shoulders, drainage deficiencies, and deteriorating pavement conditions.
The proposed capital project includes full-depth pavement reconstruction, improved shoulders, drainage upgrades, and modern safety enhancements to meet current standards. These improvements will reduce roadway departure risk, improve recovery space, and enhance safety for farm equipment, heavy trucks, school buses, and passenger vehicles.
In 2025, White County requested $8,248,800 to complete Phase I (SR 18 to Chalmers Road) through the Indiana Rural Communities Notice of Funding Availability (NOFA) but was not awarded due to limited funds. The safety need remains across the full corridor. The County has committed $850,000 toward Preliminary Engineering to demonstrate readiness and refine final construction costs.
